Across Wisconsin to the Mississippi river. |
During August 2004 using the small country roads through rolling farmland we crossed Wisconsin and arrived at the Mississippi River near Fountain City. |
This state park campground was right alongside the river giving us a great overnight stop. The birds and fish were abundant as were the boats loaded with fishermen!
At Alma we watched a flock of small boats negotiate the big lock. Waiting was a huge barge carrying thousands of tons of gravel down the river. The river is still being used to ship goods. |
The Great River Road took us to Prescott. This metal railway bridge raises the centre portion to allow the boats room to pass underneath.
Jim had been shopping for a bigger hammer and thought he would wake up the sleepy town! When we crossed the river we were in Minnesota. |
Here are some Gold Wings parked at the home of Barb and Bob Grueschow in Apple Valley. We met Bob and Barb in Baltimore, Maryland and they were the first friends we made in the States. |
The members of Women on Two Wheels arrived on their big road bikes for a get together. They also brought along the men and we all had a good laugh. Then we went SHOPPING-
The Mall of America is reputed to be the biggest in the World- (everything is in USA). We spent a whole day walking the four floors of shops-all Dot bought was a small rubber chicken that lays an egg when squeezed! |
The licence plate for Jims new bike had been sent to Barbs and when we arrived at the Ponderosa campsite at Zumbro Lake Jim was eager to check his bike over. He was surprised to find a critter had used the air box as a corn store and he had to upend the bike to empty it all!
At last we could get out on the trails and went over to Wabasha beside the Mississippi to visit the National eagle centre. Check out the DVD of the film Grumpy Old Men.
Here the dedicated volunteers look after injured Bald Eagles. In winter this area is crowded with these magnificent birds who feed off the fish. |
Near Millville at the Spring Creek MX circuit riders were gathering for the round of the Pro National MX series. We joined them and camped on the field. |
On Friday the amateurs had a chance to race the circuit. Starting at 7am there were over 60 races going on till dark. Most were four laps and the organisation was very slick. There were classes for everyone from five year olds, women, over 50's and fossils!
There were awards for everyone! |
As the Pro's arrived we spotted some magnificent trucks and motor homes.
Our FIM press passes allowed us access to the top riders. Jim watches as James 'Bubba' Stewart signs his autograph. |
Once Ricky Carmichael had finished looking at his practise times Dot was lucky enough to have a chance to talk with him! WOW! |
Feast your eyes on this full factory Honda rocket ship!
This guy had brought his family for a holiday to see the MX-it was also their first AMA event. Dot spoke to him just because he was wearing a Husaberg cap-a rare sight in USA. |
He rode in the 2002 Welsh on the same minute as Jim. How's that for a coincidence?
There were one or two other well known guys watching the action! Jim chats with Jamie Dobb, Britain's World MX Champion |
Hot, fast and exciting MX racing. |
Sunday was warm and sunny and the crowds arrived to watch the racing! They were not disappointed.
Although Aussie Chad Reed got the holeshot in the first 250 race RC soon stormed past to take the lead. |
As his many fans expected Bubba took both wins in the 125 class to increase his lead in the Championship. |
The mechanics were taking no chances before the start of the final moto!
Suzuki had a big presence and this is a careful inspection of the interior of Tortelli's engine.
The reward was a fine third place for the popular rider and his son stole the limelight on the podium. |
This is the inside of one of the Yamaha team trucks-too clean to be a MX van!!
Once again in race two RC was in a class of his own. The crowd roared every time he jumped the table top-all 105feet- lap after lap! |
The Champagne flowed as the victors sprayed the happy, hot and tired crowds. |
Time to return to the Great River road. |
After the hot weather the rain arrived to flood everywhere. We have experienced a thunderstorm in every state! Who says it rains all the time in England?
From the scenic viewpoint at the Pikes Peak state park in Iowa there is a lovely view of the river shrouded in the morning mist! |
At Clinton we parked for the night beside the old riverboats. One was a Casino which offered a BBQ steak meal for $11 and very cheap drinks. We ruined our budget by loosing $7 on the slot machines! |
Another day, another state, Illinois and at last we found Route 66. It doesn't really exist now as the Interstates have all been re-numbered and it is now the I 55.
We took a comfort stop at the Dixie Truckers rest area and wandered around the Hall Of Fame. No good trying to stay the night as the noise from all those parked trucks was tremendous! |
So on to Indiana and another more famous Hall Of Fame where we spent the afternoon looking at all the lovely race cars and fantastic silverware. The Brickyard track was being resurfaced so we could only visit the in field and Gasoline Alley!
At Dayton, Ohio is the Aviation Heritage Park. The cycle shop belonging to the Wright brothers is preserved.
Our next stop was the USAF Museum also at Dayton. It took us two days to look around the displays. Dot boards Airforce One
This is the nose of the experimental X3 from 1953- looks kind of familiar! |
Wow! This is what you call a an off roader! It carries a small ICBM and is equipped with a plough to dig itself into the ground while travelling at 55mph.
Jim starts looking for that spanner he lost! |
And guess what? Jim found yet another Mosquito! |
Jim was delighted to see a B36 on display. He last saw one at Burtonwood air base after the war!
Looking along the wing gives some idea of the size of this huge bomber-note the rear propellers for six of the ten engines! |
To finish off, the Band of the USAF Night Flight gave a concert of Glenn Miller music-great end to the visit!
Oh no-not another Hall Of Fame Museum! |
Just outside Colombus, Ohio the AMA have their headquarters and a small museum full of famous bikes. Most of the space was taken up by Harleys! |
This plaque is for Bernie Schrieber who rode SWM after winning the World Trials Championship. We were disappointed that there was little mention of the many great GP riders. |
After all this culture we decided it was time for a rest at a campsite. The washing, cleaning and repairs needed attention before we could go playing in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, the land of the lonesome Pine! |
