PCB layout for the Beady P38 diagnostics interface board with CAN option

I am upgrading Dogger, my P38 motorhome. After 50,000 miles travelling it needs some love, and one thing I want is better diagnostics for when I travel. So therefore I am building one.

This will be totally open source (so you can mess with the code). I will load all the code to my Git for you all.

This is a post to test the enthusiasm of the P38 (and D2) community, if you want it.

I have access to nearly all modules. I don’t need most of them because Dogger has most of it removed, however the wife has a mint original 4.6 2001 so I will add everything I have. I also have Disco TD5 stuff so I could add that.

Dogger has an M57 306D1 DDE4. I will also add 306D2 DDE5 code into it.

That way this little beast will cover lots of people’s shitboxes, pretty off-road stuff and pavement princesses.

My requirements

  1. Fast. Turn it on, get diagnostics ASAP. Plug it in, unplug it, molest the next door’s cat with it, it will just work. I make this stuff for Dakar cars; we have zero patience for slow diag stuff.
  2. Easy to use. No waiting for it to load stuff, no looking at legal waffle, no accepting anything, just straight at it.
  3. Cheap, so you can abuse it and get another.
  4. Added features like CAN and sniffer wires to hack other stuff.

So there are two screen options: the Waveshare 3″ touchscreen or the bigger Tab5.

They are both very capable. The smaller one will easily kill the job; the bigger Tab5 is overkill.

I have already ordered a board for the smaller Waveshare screen.

This will only ever be a kit, so you had better get your mum a quick course in basic wiring. Nothing hard, just a few wires to solder.

The small screen is around £20 and the big one £70. The interface boards will cost me about £50, and I will sell them out at cost plus postage.

Leave comments here if you’re interested. That way I will put extra effort into getting it all working. Any ideas, however stupid, are welcome. Even if it’s a dipshit idea, you never know, I like a good laugh.

DO NOT MESSAGE ME ON FACEBOOK. I WILL IGNORE IT.
